To qualify for a Bursary through the Merchant Navy Scholarship Scheme you must have achieved the necessary academic standards, and be of good general health and physique, sufficient to pass the Maritime and Coastguard Agency medical examination.
There are two routes for entry:
Foundation Degree/Scottish Professional Diploma:
You will need to have GCSEs at grades A-C or Scottish Standard level (1-3) or the equivalent in: English, Mathematics (grade A or B), Physics or Combined Science and at least two other subjects; and have attained at least 120 UCAS points in unspecified subjects at 'A' Level or equivalent.
Continuation through to a full Honours Degree, may be possible, subject to satisfactory reports on academic ability and general performance throughout the cadetship.
Higher National Diploma (HND):
You will need to have GCSEs at grades A-C or Scottish Standard level (1-3) or the equivalent in: English, Mathematics (grades A or B), Physics or Combined Science and at least two other subjects.
Candidates will only be found acceptable once they have completed the industry recognised Seafarer Medical Examination. For prospective Deck Cadets, this will include a colour and form vision test to demonstrate the absence of any colour deficiency.
This is usually arranged after you have been interviewed and provisionally accepted for a cadetship. However, if you have an underlying medical condition that you believe may cause a problem, please contact us and we will advise you on the best course of action.
