The High Cliffs of the North Yorkshire coast hide a number of small ports, the most significant of which is Whitby. Captain Cook was apprenticed to a Whitby ship-owner and made the first of his epochal voyages of discovery (1768-1771) in a covered Whitby built 'cat' - a small ship rigged collier renamed Endeavour. Whitby has a beautiful sandy beach. Nine miles away from Whitby is the village of Goathland, the setting for the drama Heartbeat in which you can see the stunning scenery which abounds in the area.
