A brief explanation should be given of the purpose for which the work is being carried out.
Where a new AtoN is to be established, a relevant and distinctive name
or number should be assigned. Where possible this name should be shown
on the aid.
Where an existing aid is to be repositioned, the range and bearing in deg T x metres should be provided where possible.
Latitude and Longitude should be expressed in degrees, minutes and
decimals of a minute to three places of decimals in WGS84 datum.
Where it is not possible to give the Latitude and Longitude, grid
references may be given provided the grid / datum is clearly indicated.
The information given should provide a good physical description of the
aid/works. In the case of buoys, details of the colour, shape, and if
fitted, topmark, should be provided. In the case of Lighthouses/Beacons,
details of the daymark, colour and if fitted, topmark, should be
provided.
(It will be assumed that when applications for the establishment of
cardinal buoys, isolated danger marks and safe water marks are made,
these will be as per the IALA recommendations).
Drawings/plans to support your application can be submitted using the "Attachments" section of the form.
For lighted aids, the flash character, range and its breakdown should be
given. For example the character of a light which flashes red every 5
seconds with a 5 mile range and a flash length of 0.3 seconds would be
described as Fl R 5s (fl 0.3, ec 4.7) 5nm.
The heights of the lights above MHWS or deck level (in the case of floating pontoons) should be provided whenever possible.
The arc of visibility of the light must be stated if not 360 deg.
The range should be the nominal range expressed in nautical miles.
Nominal range is the luminous range where the meteorological visibility
is 10 nautical miles, which is equivalent to a transmission factor of T =
0.74.
Types of power source include mains, mains with battery backup, solar, wind, and battery.
