Seafarers UK is a charity that helps people in the maritime community, by providing vital funding to support seafarers in need and their families. Seafarers UK does this by giving money to organisations and projects that make a real difference to people’s lives across the Merchant Navy, Fishing Fleets, Royal Navy and Royal Marines.
Formed in 1917 as King George’s Fund for Sailors, Seafarers UK:
- Runs Get Stripey, its annual fundraising day
- Promotes exciting Challenge Events
- Organises Seafarers Awareness Week, an annual campaign to raise awareness of Britain’s dependence on seafarers. In 2014, Seafarers Awareness Week is 21-29 June.
The services Seafarers UK funds have a positive impact on all seafarers. Last year, thanks to funding from Trinity House and the generosity of individual and corporate donors, Seafarers UK gave grants totalling £2.5 million to over 80 maritime welfare charities. Seafarers UK receives no government funding and is heavily dependent on public donations and legacies to maintain its grant-making programme.
