A Brief Tour of Trinity House
The Court RoomThe centrepiece of the first floor is the elegant Court Room, bathed in generous light from the high windows overlooking Trinity Square. It is ideal for receptions prior to luncheon or dinner, and as a venue for board meetings. The carpet, woven in Ireland, is the second largest single-loom carpet in the British Isles and contains 20,736 knots to each square yard.Click here for a 360° view of the room with its magnificent carpet depicting the Arms of the Corporation. Among the paintings in this spacious room is a small contemporary portrait of Elizabeth I, attributed to Marcus Gheeraerts. The allegorical scene painted on the ceiling was first restored around 1850 by William Holman Hunt, who later became a famous pre-Raphaelite artist. According to his autobiography, he was paid £30 for this work, which allowed him 'to clear off his back accounts'. |
