The 2009 Calendar Competition
Enter our popular lighthouse photography competition and your image could be in our 2009 calendarFor the third successive year Trinity House is running a photography competition to find 12 images for its popular lighthouse calendar. In previous years the competition has brought in many excellent entries ensuring that the judging panel, which has been chaired by Alan Titchmarsh (celebrity gardener and author of ‘The Last Lighthouse Keeper’) and Griff Rhys Jones (comedian and presenter of the BBC’s ‘Restoration’ series) in 2006 and 2007 respectively, has had some very tough choices to make. Speaking at the awards ceremony for the winners of the first calendar competition which produced the 2007 calendar Alan Titchmarsh said, “It sounds clichéd but it was so difficult and many of you in the audience now probably hate me for not choosing yours [as the overall winner]! It was very tough. I laid them out on the table, moved them around, put some out, put them back in again. You are all to be congratulated on making this such a difficult decision.” Griff Rhys Jones chaired the judging panel to select photos for the 2008 calendar, on sale in the autumn. He said, “Lighthouses may seem superficially the same but each has its own characteristics and profile. Here are some of the loveliest. We must treasure them. They are part of our collective maritime history, and they stop me, and millions like me, putting our boats on the rocks.” The images in the 2008 calendar depict the lighthouses at: The overall winner was Phil Worsley’s image of Strumble Head lighthouse, which coincidentally celebrates its centenary in 2008. Their stunning coastal locations and the romanticism that surrounds the buildings make lighthouses a popular subject for photographers of all ages and abilities. The excellent entries over the last two years have also resulted in beautiful calendars for Trinity House in which the user-paid organisation is delighted. Jeremy de Halpert, executive chairman of Trinity House and a member of the judging panel, said, “We have been extremely pleased with the number of excellent entries we have received over the last two years and the high standard this has brought to our calendars. We anticipate that the entries for the 2009 calendar will be of a very high quality once again.” To submit an entry for the 2009 calendar please download the rules and entry form here.
