The General Lighthouse Authorities of the United Kingdom and Ireland (GLAs) are world leaders in the provision of marine aids-to-navigation. Research and Radionavigation (R&RNAV) is a key area for us as we drive leading-edge projects of global significance in the marine environment, comprising the application of global satellite-systems and the provision of augmentation and application-level systems.
This is an exciting opportunity to join our internationally-renowned R&RNAV team and to develop skills and knowledge in radionavigation systems. In the first instance you will work on our eLoran programme. We will also sponsor you to undertake a relevant part-time Masters Degree, whilst undertaking on-the-job training with exposure to the different technological disciplines operated within the department.
As your experience increases, your role will impact on every area of our work; you will assist our team to deliver a wide variety of projects, performing engineering research and development of both a practical and academic nature. You will also participate in technical studies, sea-trials and support project administration and control. You will have the opportunity to contribute to internationally published work.
From day one in position, your high level mathematical knowledge will be required for the tasks you undertake. You will therefore be highly numerate, with a degree in Mathematics, Physics, Electronic Engineering, or a surveying discipline (2:1 preferred). Experience in programming languages (preferably ‘C’ or ‘C++’) and mathematical modelling (preferably Matlab™) is also required. You will be flexible, confident and enthusiastic with good interpersonal skills and the ability to communicate effectively at all levels. Good organisation and time management skills are essential, as are well-developed IT skills.
