Support Services

Maintaining our Aids to Navigation requires a dedicated and highly skilled workforce on land and at sea.

To maintain the service, Trinity House operates a fleet of two purpose built Lighthouse Tenders, three launches and a helicopter whose day to day activities are co-ordinated from the Trinity House Central Planning Unit in Harwich, which is manned 24 hours a day.

The work of the support units can range from routine buoy servicing, attending aid to navigation casualties, towing lightvessels, refueling and delivering technicians and supplies to lighthouses and light vessels, hydrographic surveys, to searching and marking dangerous wrecks.

Buoys brought ashore by the Lighthouse Tenders are landed at Harwich and Swansea, where they are water jetted, repaired and repainted in preparation for further service at sea.

Highly skilled maintenance technicians perform routine servicing of Aids to Navigation and emergency repairs in the event of a breakdown.
