The most recent event was a test of endurance, skill and team working as teams of six people faced two big challenges in one short weekend. The Seafarers UK Great Island Challenge!
Between the 9-12 May many fundraising teams got together to sail around the Isle of Wight. Once completed the weary sailors were then tasked with cycling around the island - that's 62 miles of hilly coastline!
But why did they do this and why is Trinity House continuing to raise money?
The Charity...
The participants of the Great Island Challenge, and other events supported by Trinity House staff this year, are raising funds for Seafarers UK - a national charity that fundraises and gives grants to over seventy charities that help people who have worked at sea. This includes helping people from the Royal Navy, Merchant Navy and fishing fleets and their families.
On average, every month, there are 10 major accidents in the fishing industry and two vessels are lost; thousands of veterans still need help in their old age, having risked their lives for this country; many ex-seafarers face unemployment and homelessness. Seafarers UK provides vital support for these people and many others.
